According to the sacred traditions of Braj, Lord Shiva wished to witness the divine Raas Leela of Lord Krishna with Shri Radha Rani and the Gopis. However, only Gopis were allowed to enter the Raas Leela. Lord Shiva prayed to Yogmaya and, with her blessings, assumed the form of a Gopi before entering the divine Raas Leela. Because of this sacred event, Lord Shiva came to be known as Gopeshwar Mahadev, meaning the Lord of the Gopis. For centuries, devotees have visited this temple to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva before visiting the major Krishna temples of Vrindavan. The temple represents the beautiful harmony between Shaivism and Vaishnavism and remains one of the most revered spiritual destinations in Braj.
